Stiffer Punishment for manhole covers and wire mesh thieves in Port Harcourt

The Rivers State House of Assembly in its 23rd Legislative Sitting, today, Monday 31, 2023, has called for the amendment and activation of relevant sections of the Rivers State Public Works and Utilities Protection Law No. 9 of 2012 to prescribe stiffer punishment for manhole covers and fencing wire mesh thieves.

The House further called for the setting up of a joint taskforce of security personnel and relevant ministries to ensure the enforcement of the provisions of the Principal Law.

According to rivnews report, recall that the Speaker, Rt Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule in the 10th Legislative Sitting of the House on Tuesday, 11th July, 2023, committed a Motion on the "removal and looting of manhole covers and fencing wire mesh on our roads" to an Adhoc Committee, wherein the committee was mandated to among other terms of reference investigate and recommend ways of curbing the menace.

Commenting on the Report of the Adhoc Committee, the Speaker thanked the committee for a detailed Report and assured the House that the Resolution of the House would be forwarded to the appropriate quarters for implementation.
