IYC protest against Nigerian Police Rivers State Command in Port Harcourt

Ijaw Youth Council Worldwide has condemned what it described as the inadequate response of the Rivers State Police Command to the alleged murder of Alefuro Peterside a police officer in Elekahia, Port Harcourt.

Jonathan Lokpobiri the IYC President, who led other leaders of the Council in a peaceful protest to the Command Headquarters at Moscow Road said the pace of the investigation was deeply distressing.

The President also called for swift, transparent, and impartial investigation while adding that the mental capacity of police officers be checked before being deployed to the states.

Other IYC leaders also demanded justice for the victim's family and called on the authorities, noting that the police response could promote more chaos than reduce tension in the region.

They also noted that the youth body stands united against police brutality and abuse of power.

Our correspondent reports that the police authorities had earlier said Alafuro was killed by a stray bullet by an officer of the Police Mobile Force 43 Squadron Gombe State.

Recall that the Spokesperson of the Rivers State Police Command SP Grace Iringe-Koko said the officer shot in the air in response to an alarm raised by some persons that there were robbers around the area.
